About Austin Peay State University

Austin Peay State University began as the Austin Peay Normal School as a two-year junior college and teacher-training program. The school was created in 1927 and named in honor of Governor Austin Peay who was serving his third term as governor of Tennessee when the school began. Initially, the school struggled financially but enrollment continued to grow. However, the campus where the school stands has been a home for education since 1806 when the Rural Academy was established there. It closed in 1810 but was replaced by the Mt. Pleasant Academy the following year. Three other schools followed Mt. Pleasant which closed in 1824 – Clarksville Academy (1825-1848), Masonic College (1849-1850) and Montgomery County Masonic College (1851-1854).

In 1939, the school was authorized to offer four-year degrees and the first degree was issued in 1942. The school became Austin Peay State College in 1943 and began offering graduate studies in 1952. The school gained university status in 1967.

Today, the University offers outstanding programs to more than 10,000 students who are enrolled. It is the state’s largest provider of higher education to those in the military with almost 2,700 military-related students enrolled. The Tennessee Higher Education Commission honored the University by naming it a Veteran’s Education Transition Support Campus (VETS). This indicates that the University prioritizes outreach to veterans and successfully delivers services that are supportive and students can prosper.
