Learning About Organizational Psychology/Industrial-Organizational Psychology at DePaul University

Undergraduate students at DePaul University can study organization psychology and industrial-organizational psychology in one of two ways. A minor in industrial-organization psychology is available only to non-psychology majors. It is usually pursued by business students who want to include the scientific study of the workplace as part of their education. For psychology majors, a concentration in industrial-organizational psychology is available, which can lead students to DePaul’s Master of Science and Doctoral Programs in industrial and organizational psychology. Online study is not available for any of these programs.
DePaul’s Industrial-Organizational Psychology MA/Ph.D. is a combined program that only admits students who intend to pursue a Ph.D. The entire program can be completed in about four years. During this time, students will learn about motivation, training, leadership, performance appraisal and consultation. You will also have the ability to add a specialization in communication, management, marketing or women’s and gender studies. DePaul cites a Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) that shows high growth rate in this area as a prime reason to study industrial and organizational psychology. BLS indicates that jobs in this sector will increase by an estimated 53 percent between 2012 and 2022.
About Depaul University
DePaul University, with its main campus located in the Lincoln Park neighborhood on Chicago’s near north side and another one in the city’s downtown, is the nation’s largest Roman Catholic universities and in the top 10 of private universities in the United States. The school has more than 300 undergraduate and graduate programs and prides itself on its small class size that averages less than 40 students, a fact not found at many larger universities. More than 98 percent of courses are taught by professors, not teaching assistants. DePaul has 14,500 undergraduate students and 7,900 graduate students and has a diverse population with students coming from 114 different countries.
The Congregation of the Mission, a Catholic society of priests and brothers that follow the teachings of St. Vincent DePaul, founded St. Vincent’s School in 1898. Classes began on Sept. 5 in what was once St. Vincent’s Church, with classrooms on the first and second floor serving approximately 70 students taught by seven faculty members. The school was chartered as DePaul University at the end of 1907, the same year that three university buildings were constructed. In 1915, the Ilinois College of Law joined forces with DePaul to become the Depaul University School of Law. As the school continued to grow, one of its most notable innovations was the establishment of the School for New Learning in 1972, one of the first colleges geared toward adult students. The school began a six-year strategic plan to expand in 1989 and followed it up with another six-year plan in the 1990s, that saw significant campus expansion and increases in enrollment. Today, more than 92% of graduates are working within six months or pursuing another educational degree.
DePaul University Accreditation Details
DePaul University has been accredited by a number of institutions for a wide variety of its programs. The Higher Learning Commission gave DePaul institution accreditation for the first time in 1926. The American Psychological Association, Committee on Accreditation: Clinical Psychology (CLPSY) accredits DePaul’s doctoral program on industrial and organizational psychology.
DePaul University Application Requirements
Freshman applicants to DePaul have a choice of an early admission or a regular admission program. Early action applicants must submit their materials by November 15 in the year prior to admission. The regular deadline is February 1. High school transcripts are required, with applicants strongly recommended to have four years of English, three years of science (of which two must be in lab science), three years of mathematics, two years of social science and two years of language study other than English. DePaul is a test-optional university, which means that applicants do not have to submit ACT or SAT test scores for consideration with their application. You can have your high school counselor submit a letter of recommendation, as well as other recommendation letters, through the Common Application. College credit earned while in high school, either through the International Baccalaureate or the Advanced Placement Service, should also be submitted.
Applicants to the Industrial-Organizational Psychology MA/Ph.D. combined program must complete an undergraduate degree and submit transcripts of undergraduate work. Supporting materials must include a statement of purpose/personal statement and one or more letters of recommendations from individuals who can address your ability to succeed at the graduate level. The Psychology Department also assesses GRE scores, the applicant’s GPA and looks for a strong commitment to research to be admitted to the graduate program. International students for undergraduate and graduate work must also successfully pass an English test.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition rates for undergraduate students is $630 per credit hour for part-time students and $39,369 per year for full-time students. Tuition rates do not include meals and housing or books. Undergraduates will automatically be considered for most types of financial aid once they have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). DePaul awards more than $33 million in scholarships each school year. Freshmen applicants who are admitted under the school’s Early Action Program will receive the greatest consideration for academic scholarships. Freshman academic scholarships include the Presidential Scholarship, Deans’ Scholarship, DePaul Scholars’ Award, St. Vincent DePaul Scholarship, which vary in value from $14,000 to $23,000 annually. Students who have been selected as a National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalist are eligible for a $3,000 Provost Award. Six different service and leadership scholarships are available, with awards beginning at $10,000 and going to full tuition.
The tuition rates for the combined psychology graduate program is $720 per credit hour.
DePaul Alumni are automatically qualified for the Double Demon Scholarship, which reduces tuition by 25 percent. The Double Demon Scholarship may not be combined with any other scholarship aid. Several other scholarships are available to graduate students and include the McNair Scholars Program, Francisco Valencia Memorial Scholarship, and the Richard J. Meister Scholarship. Graduate students are also encouraged to apply for graduate assistantships to help defer tuition costs.
