Organizational Psychology Programs at Ohio State University

Ohio State University has many opportunities for students who want to study organizational psychology. Undergrads can choose between the university’s Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BS) in Psychology programs. Both include a course called Organizational Psychology. Students must take two prerequisites before taking this class, which looks at the principles and concepts of:

  • organizational psychology
  • scientific reasoning
  • psychological research

Undergrads will also take courses such as:

  • Introduction to Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Data Analysis in Psychology
  • Psychology of Adjustment
  • Research Methods in Psychology
  • Memory and Cognition

At the graduate level, Ohio State University offers several other degree programs through the Department of Psychology. The cognitive psychology program looks at:

  • how the brain processes and makes decisions
  • neuroscience
  • memory
  • motor development
  • language skills

Majors can work in the Center for Cognitive Science to study:

  • linguistics
  • engineering
  • related fields

They can also work in the Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Brain Imaging to help professionals map the human brain and view how it responds to stimulation. Students will take classes from four key areas:

  • perception
  • human performance
  • language and speech
  • memory and cognition

The cognitive neuroscience program is the newest degree program available from the Department of Psychology. It includes opportunities for students to do brain mapping and learn how and why the brain responds to different actions. The program includes a course called Techniques and Topics in Cognitive Neuroscience that majors take in their first semesters. They will also take two classes in statistics and a course on cognitive and neuro experiments. Students enrolled in one of the other psychology programs can take classes from this discipline and work in one of the nearby facilities.

Also available is a quantitative psychology program that the university recommends for students who want to study statistics and assessment methods. During their first semesters, students will choose an advisor who has interests that align with theirs. They will work with that advisor on research projects and get help from them when doing a thesis and then a dissertation. Majors can expect to spend up to four years in this program and doing on-campus and off-campus work. The university offers a graduate program in decision psychology too.

Through the Fisher College of Business, students can earn a doctoral degree in organizational behavior with an emphasis on management and human resources. This program is best for those who want to work as managers and need help choosing the best candidates for open positions. It requires that students do an assistantship during their first year. They must  complete a research paper in their second year. Students will work on their dissertations during the third year and present a final paper that shows they are ready to face the job market. In their fourth and final year, they will teach at least one course and do an oral defense of their dissertations.

Ohio State University Accreditation Details

OSU has accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission, which takes the place of the old regional accreditation that it once held. This accreditation entitles students who want to use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to complete that application as early as the beginning of October to get a financial aid package. Some of the internships and programs for psychology majors have accreditation from the American Psychological Association (APA) too. OSU also holds accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), which covers the organizational behavior program.

Ohio State University Application Requirements

Ohio State is such a selective university that some prospective undergrads find it helpful to attend a community college or small university and then transfer to OSU later. It has an acceptance rate of less than 50% for incoming freshmen. The university has different requirements for those applying to the main campus in Columbus than it has for those applying to a regional campus.

It has both priority and regular application deadlines of November first and February first. Students can access both the Common Application and Coalition Application on August first. When they submit the online application, they need to enter a fee waiver code from the university or pay the application fee. OSU asks for a minimum of a standardized test score and a high school transcript. Students can also provide a letter of recommendation or a second test score.

Graduate students applying to the OSU Department of Psychology programs can apply for a fee waiver to cover the application fee or pay that $60 fee when applying. Both doctoral and graduate students will use the same application. OSU has a December first deadline for applications. It asks students to apply for financial aid by the middle of the month. They need to include:

  • three electronic letters of recommendation
  • a GRE score and transcripts
  • or details about all the psychology courses they took
  • a statement of purpose or autobiographical statement
  • resume

Students need to select the area of psychology that interests them on the application. Some of the requirements for those applying to the organizational behavior program include:

Tuition and Financial Aid

At OSU, undergrads pay $11,084 per year as Ohio residents and $32,061 as nonresidents as well as an average of $12,708 to live on-campus. They qualify for:

  • university scholarships
  • grants from the Ohio government
  • federal work-study

Some students take out federal loans too.

The university’s graduate students pay an average of $12,425 as residents and $37,122 as nonresidents. OSU guarantees that graduate and doctoral students will receive enough financial aid to cover four to five years in a program, including fellowships and assistantships. Students can renew their financial aid at Ohio State University as long as they remain in an organizational psychology program.
