Organizational Psychology Programs at the University of Baltimore

The University of Baltimore appears in our ranking of the Top 15 Industrial/Organizational Certificate Programs.

The University of Baltimore offers a Master of Science in Applied Psychology with two concentrations.

  • the counseling psychology concentration
  • industrial and organizational psychology concentration

Also called the I/O concentration, it looks at how organizations can meet the needs of individuals, including both their employees and clients/customers. Students must complete 42 credits of classes and can do either an internship or practicum, which awards them up to four credits for each fieldwork experience they do.

I/O psychology students take required classes that are worth 30 credits, including:

  • The Biological Basis of Behavior
  • Research Methods
  • Organizational Psychology
  • Personnel Psychology
  • Personnel Assessment
  • Learning and Cognition

They also need to select four electives from more than 10 choices. This allows them to pick courses based on their career goals and interests. All of the electives deal with humans and the workplace. Possible electives include:

  • Occupational Stress and Health Psychology
  • Consulting Skills
  • Employment Law in Human Resource Management
  • Organizational Theory and Development
  • Special Topics in Industrial and Organizational Psychology
  • Survey Development and Implementation

Students who have a graduate degree in I/O psychology or a bachelor’s degree in psychology can enter the university’s industrial and organizational psychology certificate program, which looks at this subject in global terms. Students will take Cross-Cultural Organizational Psychology, which is a required class that looks at how different cultures use I/O psychology. They will then take nine credits of electives. Those courses include choices such as:

  • Organizational Theory and Development
  • I/O Psychology Practicum
  • Ethnic and Cultural Factors in Conflict
  • Terrorism and Counterterrorism
  • Global Marketing Management
  • Leading Across Cultures

To help students learn more about psychology, the University of Baltimore also offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) program in Psychology. Students need to take 45 credits of general courses, including:

  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Introduction to Professional Practices
  • History and Systems of Psychology

They’ll also take 15 credits of electives from courses such as:

  • Human Sexuality
  • Learning and Memory
  • Environmental Psychology
  • Abnormal Psychology
  • Multicultural Psychology
  • Organizational Consulting
  • Tests and Measurements
  • Training and Development

The university requires that majors do a final psychology project too.

About the University of Baltimore

The University of Baltimore is a public university named after the city of Baltimore, Maryland. It was established in 1925. The campus sits on top of land that people settled during the 18th century. The first campus consisted of a single building on St. Paul Street, which allowed students to attend classes in a row house. Liberal arts and other classes were available but only at night. During the 1930s, the school added several daytime programs that became part of a junior college.

The college grew significantly during the 1970s as it merged with three other campuses. Those mergers led to  dropping its junior college courses and becoming a full university. Now known as UB, it is one of the campuses in the University System of Maryland. In addition to the Baltimore campus, UB also offers classes on a satellite campus in Rockville. Students can also take classes at the College of Southern Maryland and from the UB online system.

University of Baltimore Accreditation Details

At UB, students can get a financial aid package designed to meet their needs when they file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). They receive access to this online form because UB has accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. This is the same regional accreditation that lets UB accept transfer credits.

University of Baltimore Application Requirements

Undergrads can get help with the UB application process when they contact the Office of Admissions. Incoming freshmen need to write an admissions essay that explains why they chose UB and how the university will help them achieve their goals. They can write a personal statement instead of an essay and upload it to the application. That application asks them to pay a $35 fee once they complete each section. UB also asks for a transcript and a test score. Students who finished high school more than three years ago need to submit two letters of recommendation and a resume rather than a test score. The university will also from prospective students:

  • activity lists

Students need to apply by March first to enroll in the fall semester.

The I/O Psychology program looks for students with a strong background in psychology and a good work history. Students can start in the fall or spring but need to submit their applications by the April first or December first deadline. The main requirements for incoming students include a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a social sciences area and a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Their transcripts should show that they received a grade of B or higher in a course on research methods or statistics. Other requirements include:

  • a $50 application fee
  • statement of purpose
  • GRE score
  • letter of recommendation
  • completed application

Students applying to the certificate program must meet the same requirements and apply by either deadline.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Maryland residents pay $1,240 for each class they take in an undergraduate program. Students who live in the state and enroll full time pay $4,548 per semester. This includes all of their fees and allows them to take 12 or more credits of classes. Nonresident undergrads pay either $3,316 per class as a part-time student or $10,728 each semester as a full-time student. Graduate students who live in Washington DC, any county of Delaware and select counties in Pennsylvania and Virginia qualify as in-state residents in terms of tuition. All residents pay $2,554 for each course that they take. Students from outside of these areas pay the non-resident rate of $3,613 per course.

As long as UB students submit the FAFSA, the university will consider them for all types of financial aid. This usually allows them to get federal aid, including both a Pell grant and a student loan. Certain loan programs are only available for undergrads. However, other programs are open to both graduate students and the parents of university students. Some scholarships are also available for students based on their financial needs or merit. At the University of Baltimore, students in an organizational psychology program can also qualify for work-study.
