Virginia Tech Organizational/Industrial Psychology Programs

Virginia Tech appears in our ranking of the Top 15 Master’s in Human Factors and Ergonomics.

Virginia Tech hosts three programs in psychology that offer students the opportunity to pursue organizational/industrial concentrations. Available degrees include a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Science in Psychology with a concentration in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Students may also enter the graduate degree program and eventually pursue a Ph.D. by satisfying certain doctoral class requirements while enrolled as a graduate student.

Although there is no official O/I concentration for the undergraduate degree, students are encouraged to pursue classes in that area of study if they have a particular interest in the subject. Some of the topics under discussion in the undergraduate psychology program at Virginia Tech include:

  • clinical psychology

  • industrial-organizational psychology
  • physiological psychology

Students can begin work after graduation in environments like:

  • rehabilitation centers
  • schools
  • community agencies

They can also pursue advanced study in graduate programs. Some of the undergraduate classes students will take include:

For the graduate degree program, students who choose the industrial/organizational psychology concentration will take classes that the student as a scientist and practitioner. At the conclusion of study, students will be prepared for work as teachers and researchers at a university, as well as professionals in individual, group, and organizational work settings.

Some of the quantitative topics students will consider include:

  • advanced psychometric theory
  • structural equation modeling
  • longitudinal data analysis
  • predictive analytics

Students may also take classes in:

  • Bayesian statistical inference
  • hierarchical linear modeling
  • multivariate statistics

The graduate degree also has a heavy research component. Students will conduct research throughout the program until they begin work on their thesis.

The curriculum in the graduate and Ph.D. programs adheres to the Guidelines for Education and Training at the Doctoral Level in Industrial-Organizational Psychology. Training in the graduate program will include:

About Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech is a public university located in Blacksburg, Virginia. It was established in 1872 as the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. It underwent name changes until it became Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in the 1970s. The university is a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant institution. It’s also a senior military college. The university’s official colors are burnt orange and Chicago maroon.

More than 33,400 students attend the institution. The majority of students are enrolled in undergraduate films. Students who participate in the university’s NCAA Division I games do so as the Hokies in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Notably, the university’s first-ever student traveled on foot 25 miles to attend his first class in 1872. Today, there is a statue on campus that commemorates the student’s journey to attend college.

Virginia Tech Accreditation Details

Virginia Tech is institutionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Regional accreditation is necessary for institutions that want to award fully transferrable doctoral, master’s, baccalaureate, and associate degrees. Various agencies have also accredited individual programs offered by the university. Approvals come from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. and the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics.

Virginia Tech Application Requirements

The university reveals that more than 30,000 people apply to Virginia Tech each year but that only 6,600 become entering students. The first requirement for admission for first-year students is completing several units of college preparatory work in high school. Required courses include those in:

  • English
  • math
  • science

Some majors have additional requirements for classes and may require an extra year of math or physical science.

Several factors are considered during the application process. They include:

  • the rigor of the student’s high school academic program
  • high school GPA
  • standardized test scores
  • whether the student is a first-generation college student or has experience in leadership and service

The university accepts standardized test scores and may use the results to determine the likelihood of a student’s future success as a college student.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition for students at Virginia Tech is $13,691 for students who are state residents. It’s $32,835 for students who are from outside the state. Room and board charges are $9,342 for all students. The yearly total for in-state students is estimated at $23,033. The yearly total for out-of-state students is estimated at $42,177. The tuition rate for international students is $29,950.

For graduate students, the tuition is $761.25 per credit for Virginia residents. It’s $1,534.00 per credit for non-residents. Students will also pay various fees that depend on the number of credits in which they enroll. Fees include:

  • a technology fee
  • library fee
  • a commonwealth facility & equipment fee, which is only charged to non-Virginia residents

For the virtual campus, the tuition rate is $842.50 per credit for Virginia residents and $1,642.25 for non-residents.

The financial aid process at Virginia Tech requires that students submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  Students will receive a financial aid award after submission from the Office of University Scholarships and Financial Aid. Students should also submit a separate application for scholarships through the university’s Scholarship Central portal. The deadline for scholarship applications is in January. Students may qualify for need-based and merit-based aid but should be aware that some awards are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

The university recommends that students apply for scholarships and other types of financial aid before their acceptance or denial of admission to Virginia Tech. Students qualify for scholarships from outside sources. Some of the colleges in the university offer additional financial aid.

to qualify for departmental aid at Virginia Tech students will need to submit an additional application to divisions like:

  • Accounting and Information Systems
  • the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
  • the College of Science.
