About National University
David Chigos, a retired United States Navy lieutenant commander, while serving as the director for employee training at General Dynamics Corporation, began seeing a need for a university that offered classes to non-traditional students. He found that working adults often were unable to obtain advanced degrees due to work, family or social obligations. In 1971, he established National University with 27 students in attendance.
In 1975, National University purchased two properties on Carmino del Rio in Mission Valley and, two years later, opened up facilities in Kearny Mesa. By 1979, the campus filled 15 acres with classroom and library space.
Today, National University is one of the largest nonprofit institutes of higher education in the state of California.
