About Walden University
Bernie and Rita Turner, teachers and social activists, developed Walden University based on a paper written by Harold “Bud” Hodgkinson while he was a faculty member at the University of California. Published in 1969, the paper, Walden U: A Working Paper, discussed an institute of higher learning that was student-centered. The couple worked directly with Hodgkinson to start Walden University, developing programs that focused on students rather than faculty.
Initially, Walden University only offered doctorate degrees in education but soon expanded to include degrees at the undergraduate level as well as master’s degrees in multiple subjects. The summer residency is a key concept used by Walden University. In the 1980s, the school began offering monthly four-day residencies along with the summer residency. In 2001, Sylvan Learning Systems, now known as Laureate Education, purchased a controlling interest in the University
Walden University still provides programs with a strong student-centered focus. Students and faculty collaborate on a wide range of projects and hands-on experiences are a critical part of the education process at the school. Today, more than 47,800 students attend Walden University.
